OG Tardigrade tee
$19.00
The tardigrade is a soil and ocean dwelling organism that can survive in the complete vacuum of space at temperatures close to absolute zero for long periods of time. About 900 species of Tartigrada have been described, but many more species are expected to be discovered as additional habitats are investigated.
They are normally found in the soil solution (soil water) or oceans and are very common on earth. They look like a rhinocerous crossed with a hippopotamus, but are only around 0.5 mm long. In some mossy and wet areas, there can be up to 20,000 tardigrades in each gram of water.
Volcanic tardigrades live near or in volcanic vents; marine tardigrades inhabit all seas from the intertidal to the subtidal zones, down to the abyss. Many can also survive for long periods of time while subject to temperatures well above 100 degrees C. Some tardigrades create a protein that "sheaths their DNA double-helix", protecting it from cosmic ray bombardment with a "radiation shield" and thus allowing for potential long-term survival in space. Testing this protein in human cells has been achieved with improved radiation tolerance.
